The Fire Stick is a great solution for busy families like ours, with limited time for entertainment, passion for select shows and YouTube fans. The Fire Stick really worked for us. Let’s start there, I did not want it at first. I was very opposed to it because I just did not know what to expect, and frankly, was not willing to give up on “How It’s Made” and “Mythbusters” marathons (even when it’s playing on the background when I am cleaning or cooking) but I also knew that we were paying waaaaay too much for cable bill when my husband and I have roughly 10-14 hrs (often combined) per week of TV due to busy schedules, baby on the way and outdoor activities so change needed to happen. We had our little one that same year, we had bigger plans ahead of us and we were balling on a budget. The change was not subtle and took time to get used to but it made my TV time even more thought of and more purposeful 🙂 I love having the control to watch what I want when I could but then also being able to browse and take on suggestions from Prime. In fact, by Christmas of last year, we were so hooked that we purchased another Fire Stick as a gift to our parents. As to the remote: it is very simple to use; our 1.5-year-old figured it out and now it’s Elmo (YouTube) everytime she gets her little hands on it. Limited functions and selection really give you all you need and nothing more. We are still not into the habit of using the voice control but when we do, it works like magic. Lesson learned the hard way: Make sure you have a lock on your Prime account (call customer service and they will help) because it’s not difficult for a toddler to buy episodes of Elmo that are $9.99 a pop and then leave you to have to explain (AGAIN) to the Amazon rep that you did not want to buy it.

When you use Alexa it pulls up a mix of movies that are prime and for rent or buy so it’s a bit time consuming to search for a prime movie only when using Alexa. You have to click on the Subtitle “Movie” at the top of the screen in order to find the category of movies that are prime only.

I still recommend this product because I like being able to use Alexa to pull up a list of movies that have my favorite actor in it or if I want to view only action and suspense. The downfall my boyfriend get’s annoyed listening to me click the remote for almost 20 minutes to pick out a movie because most of the free movies listed are “B”B budget and poor acting movies. All the really good movies or the most recently made movie you have to buy or rent. I am surprised to see even old movies from the 1990’s that you still have to buy or rent.

I need to order a higher powered internet service (used to do WiFi) to play the HD movies without streaming – but there are plenty of standard movies that will play. Remember to also download the KODI – so you will get endless TV shows, movies, documentaries – etc. Love it and recommend it. I cut off my cable – and got an indoor antenna – on just that I get approx 15 local channels – and they ARE GREAT TOO! Trying to cut cost where I can – will be retiring soon – will certainly enjoy watching MORE TV when that time comes. (recommend going on line to get full instructions on how to use and set up the Fire TV Stick – that was a big help for me!)
